My Games of the Year

Here are my picks for the best games released in the 2002 calendar year:

1. Puerto Rico
2. Age of Steam
3. Wildlife
4. Kanaloa
4. Moderne Zeiten
4. Clippers

The top spot was decided a long time ago--it's kind of hard to go with anything other than your all-time favorite game. Age of Steam is a very easy choice for number two and in most years would have finished on top. Kramer's Wildlife isn't nearly as good as those two, but I still enjoy it quite a lot and is a comfortable third. After that, no game really stands out. Since I like to list at least five favorite games every year, it was a matter of trying to find the best among equals. I took the coward's way out and went with a three-way tie for fourth. Those are three fine games which I'll gladly play, but I'm not sure any of them can be ranked as one of the essentials.

So in summary, it was a very top heavy year. In terms of ratings, there was a 10, a 9, an 8, and then a bunch of 7's. Any year that produces two of my Top Ten games of all time can't be considered anything but a success. And there were a lot of good games released. But the label of "greatness" was bestowed on but a few
